The Pattaya boom up, that was a boon for Hua Hin, which the mean time, discerning investors had quietly developed choice beach properties for upmarket clientele. Luxury condos and five-star hotels have gone up along the beach line. Scenic, new 18-hole golf courses made their appearances in the vicinity.
The big guns of the European five-star chain hotels also moved in. The Sofitel Won a 30-year lease of the old Railway hotel and did a fine job of renovating Bid addition, restoring the hotel to its former glory. The guest rooms have the original teak floor and paneling but subtly burnished to show its age. The classic bladed ceiling fans still hang from high ceilings more for decoration as the hotel is centrally air-conditioned.
A much appreciated inheritance is the spacious patio outside the individual guest rooms overlooking the beach lawn, large enough to hold a small tea party. In the hotel lobby, the former hotel's dining sets now have a new place in show cases as proud exhibits of its former days of glory, which European travellers asserted, rose to a class higher than the Raffle Hotel of Singapore. Those who have seen the film "Killing Fields" should know that the scenes at Hotel Pa-nom phen in the picture were shot here.
